iTunes Teams with Yahoo Music Japan
Thursday, June 14th, 2007 at 9:15 AM - by
Yahoo Japan and Apple have struck a deal that makes the iTunes Store the default music download service for Yahoo Music Japan. The agreement replaces the Sony-affiliated Mora service on the Yahoo Music Japan site, according to Macworld U.K.
Customers that prefer the Mora music download service will still have access to it, but they will have to log in on the site and change their preferred music store settings before it will be available.
The move away from Mora as the default music service means that Apple's iTunes Store will now have a more prominent roll in Japan's music download market. Yahoo Japan is the most popular Web portal site in the country reaching about 84 percent, or about 40 million, of the Web users each month.
Apple's deal with Yahoo Japan does not, however, signal similar agreements in other markets. While the deal in Japan will likely prove beneficial for both, the companies tend to be more competitive in other parts of the world and will likely keep their distance.
